Togo takes major step toward data-driven Governance with launch of National Geoportal

Togo has officially launched its National Geoportal, marking a significant leap toward modernized, data-driven governance. More than just a mapping tool, the platform represents a fundamental shift in how the government collects, organizes, and uses geospatial data to guide public policy.

Developed through collaboration between 23 ministries and over 550 local governments, the Geoportal now integrates more than 800 data layers across key sectors, including health, education, agriculture, and energy infrastructure.

This wealth of information provides a detailed overview of the country’s territorial dynamics, enabling better decision-making, urban planning, and policy evaluation.

Led by the Ministry of Digital Economy and Digital Transformation under Minister Cina Lawson, the initiative aims to enhance intergovernmental coordination, improve transparency through open data access, and foster innovation.

The system features two complementary portals: geoportail.gouv.tg for public services and professionals, and geodata.gouv.tg for citizens, allowing users to analyze and cross-reference data to identify regional disparities, forecast needs, and optimize investments.

With over 1.2 million geolocated assets and 75,000 kilometers of mapped networks, Togo now ranks among Africa’s most advanced nations in open data and smart mapping.

The move aligns with a broader West African trend, following Senegal’s GeoSN project launched in April 2025.

By embracing geospatial intelligence, Togo reaffirms its commitment to evidence-based governance, efficiency, and state modernization.
