Burkina Faso’s agriculture Minister demands Greater accountability in irrigation projects

State Minister and Minister of Agriculture, Animal, and Fisheries Resources, Commander Ismaël Sombié, conducted an inspection visit to Pâ in the Boucle du Mouhoun region to assess progress on hydro-agricultural infrastructure projects. These initiatives aim to boost agricultural productivity and support food security in the area.

However, Minister Sombié expressed strong dissatisfaction with the underutilization of developed farmlands by some beneficiaries.

He criticized a lack of commitment and discipline, warning that such laxity is unacceptable under the current government’s governance model. “The state is making significant investments to support farmers. In return, we expect responsible engagement,” he emphasized.

The minister’s remarks reflect the government’s push for greater accountability and results-driven management in key sectors, particularly agriculture—a cornerstone of Burkina Faso’s economy.

Amid climate and security challenges, achieving food self-sufficiency remains a top priority, driving large-scale irrigation and farming projects nationwide.

Sombié reminded all stakeholders—beneficiaries, contractors, and technical teams—of their shared duty to ensure project success.

While acknowledging government efforts to equip farmers with necessary resources, he stressed the need for better utilization of public investments.

This visit sends a clear message: the era of complacency is over. Rigor, accountability, and efficiency must now guide Burkina Faso’s path toward food sovereignty.
