Mali: A national campaign to restore the sacredness of republican symbols

In May 2025, the Presidency of the Republic of Mali hosted a major awareness session focused on the use and harmonization of the State’s symbols. This initiative is part of the National Values Education Program led by the President of the Transition, His Excellency Army General Assimi GOÏTA. The program aims to strengthen the sense of national belonging through greater knowledge and deeper respect for the Republic’s emblems.

Since February 2024, the campaign has expanded across the country, reaching public institutions, defense and security forces, local governments, as well as schools and universities. The objective is clear: to put an end to the trivialization or neglect of national symbols such as the flag, anthem, motto, seal, and coat of arms, and to re-establish them as foundations of social cohesion and national unity.

The session held at the Presidency marked the culmination of this extensive educational effort. It was conducted under the theme of civic ownership and the restoration of the sacred value of republican symbols. Experts in history, constitutional law, and civic education highlighted the deep meaning, origin, and proper use of each symbol in both public and private life.

This symbolic rehabilitation is part of a broader strategy to rebuild the Malian state. In the face of security, social, and institutional challenges, the transitional authorities are relying on civic and moral education to reinforce Mali’s national identity. The State also aims to promote a renewed national consciousness capable of mobilizing all citizens around a shared vision of sovereignty and stability.

At a time when Mali is strategically refocusing on its values and independence, the rediscovery of its republican symbols is a powerful act—both political and cultural. By restoring the significance of these identity markers, the authorities in Bamako are sending a clear message: sovereignty is not limited to military or diplomatic autonomy—it begins with winning back the minds and hearts of the people.
