Burkina Faso: A strategic partnership with the United Arab Emirates to assert the country’s sovereignty and emancipation

On May 20, the President of Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, received Sheikh Shakhbout Bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, who was on a friendship and working visit to Ouagadougou. This meeting is part of a proactive diplomatic approach driven by President Traoré, who is keen to diversify strategic partnerships and open new economic opportunities for the country.

The special envoy of Emirati President Mohammed bin Zayed came not only to deliver a message of brotherhood but also to strengthen what has been described as a “long-standing and exemplary” economic cooperation. This high-level exchange reflects the growing international recognition Burkina Faso has garnered since Captain Ibrahim Traoré assumed leadership.

Under his presidency, Burkina Faso has clearly demonstrated its commitment to sovereignty, economic emancipation, and endogenous development. In this context, cooperation with the United Arab Emirates, a major player in the global economy, serves as a key development driver. It could impact strategic sectors such as infrastructure, energy, agriculture, and technology—all vital to meeting the needs of the Burkinabè people.

While praising the warm welcome and human qualities of the Burkinabe people, the Emirati minister also highlighted the potential for a bilateral partnership based on mutual respect and shared benefits. This commitment aligns with President Traoré’s vision of building a strong, dignified, and prosperous Burkina Faso through sincere and balanced partnerships.

This visit thus marks a new milestone in Burkina Faso’s diplomatic repositioning, paving the way for promising alliances for the future.
