Bundesliga: Erik ten Hag takes helm at Bayer Leverkusen after Alonso’s departure

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been appointed as the new head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, signing a two-year deal to replace Xabi Alonso, who left for Real Madrid. The 55-year-old Dutchman returns to management after his exit from Old Trafford in October, where he lifted the FA Cup and Carabao Cup but struggled in the league.

Ten Hag, who previously led Ajax to three Eredivisie titles, inherits a Leverkusen side fresh off a domestic double in 2023-24 under Alonso. Despite finishing second in the Bundesliga this season, the club remains ambitious.

Sporting director Simon Rolfes praised Ten Hag’s pedigree, citing his Ajax dominance and resilience at United. “He’s a proven winner who can elevate our project,” Rolfes stated.

Ten Hag, set to begin on July 1, called Leverkusen a “top European club” and embraced the challenge of shaping a competitive squad in transition. “My goal is to build on recent success and drive the team forward,” he said.

The move marks a fresh start for Ten Hag, while Leverkusen bets on his tactical acumen to close the gap on Bayern Munich.
