Burkina Faso: President Ibrahim Traoré creates SOBIMA to boost his country’s food self-sufficiency

In a bid to bolster food self-sufficiency in Burkina Faso, President Ibrahim Traoré has embarked on a series of ambitious ventures. One standout initiative is the Agropastoral and Fisheries Offensive 2023-2025, which serves as a cornerstone of this far-reaching vision. This endeavour aims to revolutionize the agricultural sector and ensure lasting food security across the nation.

In pursuit of these objectives, President Ibrahim Traoré has implemented a suite of targeted policies.

The most recent development is the establishment of a state-owned entity known as the Burkinabe Agropastoral Inputs and Equipment Corporation (SOBIMA).

This strategic decision, endorsed during a recent cabinet session, marks a significant milestone in the country’s agricultural evolution.

SOBIMA is poised to play a pivotal role in supplying essential agricultural inputs, effectively supplanting the Agricultural Inputs and Equipment Procurement Center (CAIMA), which was disbanded concurrently.

With its primary funding sourced from public capital, this new state apparatus underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to agricultural advancement.

The inception of SOBIMA carries profound strategic implications for Burkina Faso.

Tasked with ensuring a dependable flow of critical agricultural inputs to farmers nationwide, this entity is set to fortify supply chains and furnish high-quality resources.

Consequently, SOBIMA is poised to elevate agricultural productivity and uplift the livelihoods of rural communities.

This initiative forms part of a holistic strategy aimed at modernizing the agricultural landscape and catalysing economic growth in Burkina Faso.

By bolstering farmers’ access to inputs and advocating for sustainable farming practices, SOBIMA is poised to play a pivotal role in realizing the country’s development aspirations, particularly in terms of food security and poverty alleviation.
