Burkina Faso: The Transitional Legislative Assembly offers a state-of-the-art extracorporeal circulation pump for open-heart surgery

The Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT) has donated an extracorporeal circulation pump to the Tengandogo University Hospital Center in Burkina Faso. This state-of-the-art machine is used for open-heart surgeries by temporarily replacing cardiac and pulmonary functions.

Since its acquisition in October 2023, the hospital has successfully performed 40 operations using this technology.

Dr. Adama Sawadogo, a cardiovascular surgeon, emphasizes the significance of this advancement in cardiac surgery.

He explains that the machine will expand the center’s surgical capabilities, even enabling heart transplantations.

ALT President Dr. Ousmane Bougouma views this donation as a significant progress for Burkina Faso’s medical technical capabilities.

He emphasizes the ongoing need for financial support to ensure the machine’s proper functioning and the completion of open-heart surgeries, noting that over 1000 patients are awaiting surgical interventions.

Furthermore, he stresses the importance of mobilizing more donors to make these surgeries more accessible, especially by supporting the acquisition of necessary consumables for the machine’s operation.
