Football/ Ruben Dias Injury adds to Manchester City’s mounting defensive woes

Ruben Dias has been ruled out for up to four weeks with a muscle injury sustained during Saturday’s defeat to Manchester United. The Portuguese international, 27, now joins a growing list of sidelined defenders, leaving City’s backline further depleted during a critical phase of the season.

Dias’ injury comes at a challenging time for Pep Guardiola’s side, who have only managed one win in their last 11 matches across all competitions.

The absence of the defensive stalwart, already out for seven games earlier this season due to a calf injury, will extend through the busy festive schedule and could impact key fixtures, including the Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain on 22 January.

The strain on City’s defense has been exacerbated by injuries to John Stones, Nathan Ake, Manuel Akanji, and Kyle Walker at various points.

Compounding the crisis, defensive midfielder Rodri is sidelined for the remainder of the domestic campaign with a cruciate ligament injury.

“It’s a muscular problem, and he’ll be out for three to four weeks,” Guardiola confirmed. “He wanted to stay on the pitch against United, but now he’s injured.”

Despite the setbacks, Guardiola hinted at potential reinforcements within the squad. Stones and Akanji, along with Mateo Kovacic, returned to training this week and may feature in Saturday’s match against Aston Villa.

However, goalkeeper Ederson remains doubtful with an unspecified issue.

As City looks to stabilize its faltering season, the absence of Dias underlines the challenges of maintaining consistency amid an injury-plagued squad.
