Burkina Faso Holds South Africa to 1-1 Draw in Women’s 2024 AFCON Qualifier

Burkina Faso and South Africa played to a 1-1 draw at the Charles-Konan-Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro during the first leg of the qualifying round for the 2024 Morocco WAFCON.

Coach Pascal Sawadogo’s team demonstrated resilience against the reigning champions.

The Burkinabè employed a defensive strategy, observing and allowing the opponent to come forward. Despite some counter-attack opportunities, none were converted.

In the second half, the South Africans increased their pressure and took the lead with a goal from Nicole Laren Michel in the 56th minute.

The Burkinabè avoided conceding a second goal as Fikile Venessa Magama’s shot hit the crossbar.

Following tactical adjustments by Sawadogo, Burkina Faso regained control. Balkissa Sawadogo recovered the ball and set up Juliette Nana, who then found Oriata Konaté for the equalizer in the 68th minute.

Despite the initial setback, Pascal Sawadogo praised his team’s attitude. The return leg is scheduled for December 4th in Johannesburg.
