USA: Opera/Malcolm X Opera infuses Afrofuturism with Civil Rights History at New York’s Met

The Metropolitan Opera in New York premiered «X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X», a musical biography of civil rights leader Malcolm X, combining history with Afrofuturism.

Composed by Anthony Davis, the opera tells the story of Malcolm X, a tragic hero who was assassinated just as he realized his potential for significant contributions to society.

The production consists of 12 vignettes covering key events in Malcolm X’s life.

One of the opera’s primary goals is to educate the audience about an often overlooked slice of American history, particularly relevant when some politicians are attempting to suppress historical narratives.

The revival introduces Afrofuturist elements, featuring a spaceship and a choir blending pre-colonial traditions with high-fashion sci-fi aesthetics.

The cast includes Baritone Will Liverman as Malcolm X, with Soprano Leah Hawkins playing multiple roles, including Malcolm X’s mother and wife.

The opera stands out for its diversity and themes, aiming to make the Black experience more relatable to the audience.

This opera is only the second by a Black composer in the history of the Metropolitan Opera and will run until December 2.
