AI Breakthrough in Mozambique’s Prisons: Transforming Tuberculosis Diagnosis for Inmates

In a maximum-security prison courtyard in Maputo, Mozambique, a man, identified by the term “detainee” on his orange-striped T-shirt, awaits a groundbreaking tuberculosis (TB) screening. An AI-powered portable X-ray device, heralded as a breakthrough in TB detection, instantly analyzes the X-ray without requiring a doctor’s expertise.

The initiative, managed by Stop TB, a UN-supported organization, aims to screen inmates in three Mozambican prisons. Overcrowded prisons are hotspots for TB, the second deadliest disease globally, infecting over 10 million people and claiming 1.3 million lives in 2022.

The portable X-ray, assisted by AI, provides real-time results in less than five minutes, contributing to early diagnosis crucial for saving lives and curbing transmission. TB often goes undetected in prisons due to airborne transmission and crowded cells, making early identification imperative.

The Mozambican prisons, exceeding capacity by approximately 50% in 2022, witness the impact of TB, making innovative solutions essential.

The portable X-ray, propelled by AI, outpaces traditional diagnostic methods, offering speed, convenience, and efficiency.

Suvanand Sahu, Deputy Director of Stop TB, applauds this technological leap, emphasizing its potential in resource-limited settings where radiologists may be scarce.

Positive TB cases identified through this screening project lead to quarantine measures within the prison. Inmates like Kennet Fortune, testing positive, undergo treatment, acknowledging the necessity of accepting their health condition.

The World Health Organization’s recent report highlights a global reduction in TB-related deaths in 2022, showcasing progress in combating the disease.

Sahu hopes that successful pilot projects, like Mozambique’s, will attract funding to expand the use of AI and portable X-rays, marking a significant stride towards TB eradication.
