AfDB urges finalisation of electricity agreements between Kenya and Tanzania

The African Development Bank (AfDB) aims to finalize three key agreements between Kenya and Tanzania to facilitate the exchange of excess electricity between the two countries through a transmission line valued at $309.3 million.

These agreements are seen as crucial in promoting regional electricity trade, reducing reliance on polluting and costly energy sources, and enhancing energy supply in the region.

As a major funder for this project, the AfDB emphasizes the importance of concluding these agreements swiftly to synchronize their effectiveness with the completion and commissioning of the cross-border infrastructure.

These agreements include a transfer agreement between the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) and the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited, an electricity exchange agreement between Kenya Power and Tanesco, as well as a tripartite agreement for the maintenance of the interconnected network.

The transmission line, spanning 507.5 km and designed for a transfer capacity of 2,000 MW, was supposed to be completed in January by both countries.
