Burkina Faso: Domestic tourism at the heart of President Ibrahim Traoré’s vision for a united nation
Through concrete actions, President Ibrahim Traoré is showing that domestic tourism is a strategic tool for national development and unity. The launch of the 3rd edition of the Great Domestic Tourism Season on July 19, 2025, is clear proof of this vision. Supported by the Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism, Pingwendé Gilbert Ouédraogo, the initiative brought a large government delegation to Mount Boulgou—a natural gem still little known to the wider public—located in the Nakambé region. With this symbolic gesture, the authorities aim to promote national treasures while strengthening the sense of belonging.
Mount Boulgou, which rises to about 150 meters in height, offers a panoramic view of the city of Garango and its surroundings. Though rarely explored before, this site welcomed a wide variety of visitors: government officials, tourism professionals, and young people from across the country. This strong participation reflects the desire to make tourism accessible to everyone—not just to a privileged few. By encouraging this momentum, the government shows that it sees tourism as a path to social inclusion and regional development.
For Minister Pingwendé Gilbert Ouédraogo, climbing Mount Boulgou was more than just a hike—it was both a physical and emotional experience with deep meaning for all Burkinabè. “It gives you chills, it makes you discover”, he said with enthusiasm, encouraging his fellow citizens to explore the wonders of their own country. According to him, the Great Domestic Tourism Season is not only a festive event, but a moment for citizens to reconnect with their shared heritage.
Beyond the symbolic and cultural aspects, this initiative also carries a strong economic impact. Nearly 200 accommodation providers have committed to offering discounts of up to 50%, encouraging Burkinabe families to travel more within the country. If this trend continues, it could spark a new wave of local economic activity, support small businesses, and strengthen bonds between regions. This proves that with strong political will, domestic tourism can be a powerful engine for development and national unity.
