Euro U21 Qualifiers: Luxembourg team escapes bus accident, match against France postponed

The Luxembourg U21 national team narrowly avoided tragedy on Thursday evening when their bus was involved in an accident in France ahead of their Euro 2027 qualifier against France. The incident occurred after the bus driver reportedly suffered a medical emergency, causing the vehicle to veer off course and collide with roadside hedges.

Five team members were hospitalized with minor injuries, including cuts and bruises, but were all discharged safely. The Luxembourg Football Federation (FLF), in coordination with the French Football Federation and UEFA, confirmed the postponement of the match to October 3, 2026.

Eyewitness accounts from Léo Hilger, an FLF board member present on the bus, describe the terrifying moments as the vehicle slid fifty meters before hitting hedges, shattering two windows, and trapping passengers inside for nearly two hours. Emergency medical attention was promptly provided on-site, followed by transportation to a local community center and later to a hotel for the team.

Despite the shock, the U21 squad remained united and determined to continue their campaign, with mental health support offered to help cope with the trauma. Authorities confirmed that the bus was in proper condition, and preliminary investigations suggest the accident was caused by the driver’s sudden illness.

While the players and staff are shaken, no serious injuries occurred, and the team now looks forward to regrouping and preparing for upcoming matches.
