Cameroon’s Karl Toko Ekambi announces international retirement after AFCON 2023 exit

Karl Toko Ekambi, a key player in the Cameroon national football team, has officially announced his retirement from international football following Cameroon’s elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The 31-year-old forward has decided to end his international career after the disappointment of being knocked out by Nigeria in the round of 16.

Toko Ekambi, who served as the offensive leader in the absence of Vincent Aboubakar, played a crucial role in the tournament but couldn’t propel Cameroon further.

In an Instagram post on Thursday, he expressed his disappointment about not progressing further but conveyed pride in his team for giving their all.

He stated, «A fourth chapter of the Africa Cup comes to a close, the end of a story. Forever an Indomitable Lion».

Having been part of the national team for nine years since 2015, Toko Ekambi earned 61 caps and scored 15 goals.

Recently transferred to Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, the Cameroonian striker will now focus entirely on his club career.

This marks the conclusion of an era with the Indomitable Lions, and Toko Ekambi’s decision may pave the way for other announcements within the team.

The football community will be closely following developments in the wake of this initial retirement announcement.
