DRC: President Félix Tshisekedi authorises a SADC mission to support the FARDC against the M23 rebels

Having pledged to ensure security and liberate the East Congo region currently occupied by the M23 rebels with support from the Rwandan army, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Félix Tshisekedi, is now taking decisive action.

Under his leadership, the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) have significantly escalated their efforts in recent weeks, successfully reclaiming control of certain localities.

In tandem with the strengthening of FARDC, President Félix Tshisékédi has given the green light for the deployment of a Southern African Development Community (SADC) force in the country, aimed at providing crucial assistance to Congolese forces in their fight against armed groups.

This SADC mission, comprised of troops from Malawi, South Africa, and Tanzania, operates under an offensive mandate, providing support to the regular army of the Congo.

South Africa, in particular, is set to contribute 2,900 soldiers to bolster FARDC in this intense combat scenario between defense and security forces and the rebel factions.

This strategic deployment aligns with the context of the UN peacekeeping mission, MONUSCO, gradually withdrawing from the country in response to the Tshisékédi government’s request.

With the initiation of this offensive SADC force mission, President Tshisekedi is actively advancing the ongoing military campaign against the rebels, working towards the ultimate goal of complete liberation for Congo and the restoration of lasting security and peace.
