DRC: Urgent need to relaunch peace processes in Eastern Congo

The urgent need to reinvigorate peace efforts in eastern DRC was the central theme of a two-day meeting between Presidents Félix Tshisekedi and Salva Kiir of South Sudan.

Following their consultative session in Kinshasa on Monday, the leaders emphasized the critical importance of restarting the peace processes in Nairobi and Luanda, spearheaded by the East African Community (EAC) and the African Union (AU) respectively, with the overarching goal of establishing enduring peace in eastern DRC.

Addressing the media on Monday, March 25th, both Presidents stressed the necessity of aligning efforts to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable solution that fosters regional stability.

President Tshisekedi affirmed, «President Salva Kiir’s visit is driven by the pursuit of peace. He is dedicated to advancing regional stability and fully committed to this endeavour».

President Kiir echoed this commitment, reaffirming his dedication to enhancing security and socio-economic development in the region as the President of the EAC.

He also underscored the importance of retaining the DRC’s membership within the EAC, notwithstanding reservations from some members regarding peace initiatives.

Regarding inquiries about constructing border walls along the DRC’s borders, President Tshisekedi dismissed such proposals, citing that redirecting financial resources to other areas would be more beneficial.

He further emphasized that the conflict with Rwanda does not reflect the sentiments of the people but rather stems from actions undertaken by a specific regime. «This regime’s tenure is not indefinite. Change will eventually occur», he remarked optimistically.

Following his stay in Kinshasa, President Salva Kiir is scheduled to visit Angola for discussions with President João Lourenço on the precarious security situation in eastern DRC and various other topics of mutual concern.
