Diplomacy: Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga on strategic mission to Turkmenistan and Japan

Bamako, July 30, 2025 – Malian Prime Minister, Major General Abdoulaye Maïga, embarked this Wednesday on a high-level diplomatic and economic mission that will take him to Turkmenistan and Japan. The aim of this trip is to strengthen Mali’s international relations, particularly in the areas of development cooperation and economic attractiveness.

In Osaka, the Head of Government will participate in Expo 2025, a global event focused on innovation and international cooperation. August 2 will be a symbolic day for the country, with the celebration of “Mali Day”, dedicated to showcasing Mali’s economic, cultural, and tourism potential.

The highlight of the day will be the “Mali Night”, a major cultural event featuring prominent Malian artists such as Cheick Tidiane Seck and Habib Koité. This prominent participation is intended to attract Japanese investment to Mali, strengthen bilateral economic ties, and position the country as a credible partner in West Africa.

Before heading to Japan, the Prime Minister will travel to Awaza, Turkmenistan, to represent the Transitional President, Colonel Assimi Goïta, at the 3rd United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs).

Held under the theme “Leveraging Partnerships for Progress”, the conference, which will take place from August 5 to 8, 2025, will provide Mali with an opportunity to voice its concerns about the challenges of geographic isolation—a major barrier to its logistical, commercial, and economic development. The government intends to advocate for solutions based on regional cooperation and investment in infrastructure.

This dual mission reflects the transitional government’s determination to expand Mali’s diplomatic influence while creating new economic opportunities. By taking an active role in international forums, Bamako seeks to attract strategic partners and advocate for greater consideration of landlocked countries’ specific needs in global development policies.
