Handball/ Men’s EHF Euro 2024: France clinches fourth European title in thrilling overtime victory over Denmark

France secured their fourth European handball title by defeating Denmark 33-31 in a thrilling final in Cologne on Sunday. It marks a significant victory for the French team, clinching their European championship a decade after their last triumph. Despite an initial deficit, the French players, led by standout performances from goalkeeper Samir Bellahcene, Nedim Remili, and Ludovic Fabregas, managed to equalize and end the first half tied at 14-14.

In the second half, Denmark, the reigning world champions, initially gained an advantage, with Mathias Gidsel’s precision proving crucial.

However, the French team, often referred to as the “Experts,” remained composed, making a comeback in the final ten minutes and taking the lead at the 54th minute.

The Danish team kept their composure, forcing the game into tense overtime. Despite persistent ties at halftime in extra time (29-29), the French team ultimately gained the upper hand, securing their fourth European title.

Goalkeeper Samir Bellahcene played a pivotal role in this near-flawless journey, including an epic semifinal victory over Sweden in extra time.

The French team now aims to replicate this success at the upcoming Summer Olympics in Paris in July, where they are the defending champions
