Togo: President Faure Gnassingbé responds to the flooding of the Mono River

On November 10, 2023, a total of 4,500 people from 26 localities in the municipalities of Lacs 2, Bas-Mono 1, and Bas-Mono 2 received emergency assistance following the devastation caused by the flooding of the Mono River. This commendable initiative was orchestrated by the Togolese President, Faure Gnassingbé, demonstrating his commitment to the well-being of citizens affected by climate-related events.

The Minister-Secretary General of the Presidency, Mrs. Sandra Ablamba Johnson, acting on behalf of the head of state, oversaw the distribution of kits containing food and essential items to the victims.

The moving ceremony took place in Avévé, in the Bas-Mono prefecture, and was honored by the presence of several dignitaries, including the Minister of Social Action, Women’s Protection, and Literacy, Adjovi Lolonyo Anakoma-Apedoh, the Minister of Security and Civil Protection, Calixte Batossie Madjoulba, and the Minister of Universal Access to Care, Jean-Marie Koffi Ewonoulé Tessi.

Representatives from local authorities as well as traditional and religious leaders also attended this significant event.

This initiative is part of the Emergency Program of Solidarity for Disaster-affected Populations and the Program to Support Vulnerable Populations (PAPV), both initiated by the head of state himself.

These efforts demonstrate the government’s ongoing commitment to protecting citizens from natural disasters.

In an atmosphere filled with gratitude, the beneficiaries of this humanitarian assistance expressed their thanks to Faure Gnassingbé for his regular humanitarian actions in favor of the populations along the Mono River coast.

These concrete gestures prove that vulnerable populations exposed to climate-related risks occupy a central place in the country’s ‘s development policy. The displayed solidarity underscores the importance of national unity and compassion in building a resilient society in the face of environmental challenges.
