World Cup 2026 Qualifier: Senegal stalls against Togo

Senegal faced a lackluster performance in their second World Cup 2026 qualifying match, settling for a disappointing 0-0 draw against Togo at Kégué Stadium in Lomé. Uncharacteristically subdued, the African champions found themselves largely dominated by the Togolese side, who came close to clinching victory in the dying moments if not for the heroics of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

From the start, Togo asserted themselves, with Placca Fessou embodying their offensive aggression, albeit marred by imprecise finishing.

Fessou’s missed opportunities included two wayward long-range shots and a header off target, while Sadio Mané failed to capitalize on a chance. Togo continued to press, with Edouard Mendy denying Khaled Narey’s attempt with a strong save.

The second half saw a revitalized Senegal, responding to coach Aliou Cissé’s halftime motivation.

Captain Kalidou Koulibaly led with a headed effort, followed by Pape Matar Sarr’s shot sailing over the crossbar.

Despite Senegal’s improved showing, Togo’s Fessou persisted with powerful but inaccurate free-kick attempts.

The African champions had a close call with Nicolas Jackson’s shot, but Togo’s goalkeeper Steven Mensah made a crucial save.

Late in the game, Togo missed opportunities through Ihlas Bebou and Fo Doh Laba, while Edouard Mendy’s double save, thwarting Laba’s missile and intercepting Abdou Ouattara’s attempt, secured the draw.

The match concluded with a 0-0 score, leaving both teams with a share of points, but Senegal may count themselves fortunate to escape Togo’s late offensive surge.
