DRC / Call for Tolerance and Citizenship: President Tshisekedi Condemns Acts of Political Violence

The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, has strongly condemned the recent acts of violence directed against Martin Fayulu during his tour in Tshikapa, in the Grand Kasaï region. These incidents, which occurred last week, have raised concerns about the safety and freedom of movement of candidates vying for the upcoming presidential election.

According to information shared by Tina Salama via Twitter on Sunday, November 5, 2023, President Tshisekedi called on Congolese citizens to display tolerance and citizenship towards all candidates selected for the upcoming elections.

Martin Fayulu, the target of these attacks, strongly denounced this behaviour during his rally in the region, while also calling for unity among all Congolese.

It is essential to note that such acts of violence and intolerance were not observed during Martin Fayulu’s recent arrival in Kananga, in the Kasaï-Central province, known as the political stronghold of Félix Tshisekedi.

These events underscore the importance of security and the respect of the rights of each candidate and their supporters during the electoral period.

President Tshisekedi, therefore, urges all Congolese citizens to exercise restraint, mutual respect, and promote a peaceful political climate, which is essential for fair and democratic elections.

In these crucial times for the country’s political future, tolerance and citizenship should be the cornerstones of a society where political differences are expressed peacefully, without resorting to violence.
