Champions League Recap: Bayern, Inter, Real Madrid, and Real Sociedad Advance to Round of 16

Four clubs made it to the UEFA Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday, with Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Real Sociedad all successfully progressing. Meanwhile, RC Lens faced their first defeat in the group stage. Here’s a more detailed summary of the key matches :

  1. Bayern Munich 2-1 Galatasaray

Harry Kane played a pivotal role, scoring two late goals to secure Bayern’s qualification in Group A. His header and close-range finish, assisted by substitute Mathys Tel, extended Bayern’s impressive streak of 17 consecutive group stage victories. The match was a tough one, with Galatasaray having a Lucas Torreira goal disallowed for offside in the second half.

  1. Copenhagen 4-3 Manchester United

A dramatic match saw Copenhagen mount a remarkable comeback against Manchester United, who were reduced to ten men. Rasmus Højlund’s brace against his former team initially put United in control, but a red card for Marcus Rashford shifted the momentum.

Mohamed Elyounoussi and a Diogo Gonçalves penalty leveled the score before Bruno Fernandes put United ahead with a penalty.

However, Copenhagen finished strongly, with Lukas Lerager equalizing and Roony Bardghji scoring a spectacular late winner.

  1. Arsenal 2-0 Sevilla

Arsenal dominated their Group B match, and Leandro Trossard’s goal just before the half-hour mark, created by Jorginho’s assist to Bukayo Saka, put them ahead.

Arsenal maintained control throughout the game, not allowing a single shot on target until the 97th minute when Saka, who was injured late in the match, effectively sealed Arsenal’s eighth consecutive home win in European competition.

  1. PSV 1-0 Lens:

PSV narrowly defeated the previously unbeaten Lens.

Captain Luuk de Jong scored the lone goal in the 15th minute with a header following Johan Bakayoko’s cross.

Both teams had opportunities to increase the scoreline, with Joey Veerman’s shot saved by Lens goalkeeper Brice Samba and Morgan Guilavogui hitting the post after coming on as a substitute.

  1. Real Madrid 3-0 Braga:

Real Madrid secured their spot in the round of 16 in a commanding fashion. Andriy Lunin, starting in place of the injured Kepa Arrizabalaga, saved an early penalty from Álvaro Djaló, setting the tone for the match. Real Madrid capitalized on Braga’s missed opportunity, with goals from Brahim Díaz, Vinícius Júnior, and Rodrygo in the second half.

  1. Napoli 1-1 Union Berlin:

Rudi Garcia’s Napoli led briefly against Union Berlin, with David Fofana scoring his first Champions League goal for Napoli in the 52nd minute.

However, Matteo Politano’s opener in the 39th minute was later canceled out. Union Berlin faced elimination from the competition, while Napoli retained hopes of qualifying.

  1. Salzburg 0-1 Inter Milan: Lautaro Martinez emerged as the hero for Inter Milan, converting a late penalty that secured their place in the round of 16 and eliminated Salzburg.

Throughout the match, inter had the better chances, with Alessandro Bastoni and Davide Frattesi coming close, and Lautaro’s header hitting the crossbar.

Lautaro’s goal came in the final minutes after Mads Bidstrup was penalized for handball.

  1. Real Sociedad 3-1 Benfica:

Real Sociedad swiftly took control against Benfica with three early goals. Mikel Merino opened the scoring in the sixth minute, followed by goals from Mikel Oyarzabal, who was named the Player of the Match, and Ander Barrenetxea.

Despite a goal from Rafa Silva and an improved second half from Benfica, they couldn’t stage a comeback.

Benfica’s fourth consecutive defeat in the tournament led to their elimination, while Real Sociedad topped their group.
