Mali: Malian forces continue their advance in Kidal

Malian forces, accompanied by Wagner’s Russian auxiliaries, resumed their advance towards Kidal in the early hours of the morning after having been stationed in the Alkit area all weekend. According to a Malian army press release, the advance was marked by the thwarting of ambushes and low-intensity skirmishes. In addition, a vehicle belonging to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (Minusma), in rebel hands, was reportedly destroyed.

However, the Malian army has not confirmed its entry into Kidal. The rebels of the People’s Security and Defence Council (CSP) have reported significant air strikes by Malian army drones and fighter jets on or near Kidal.

Although the town remains under rebel control, the cutting of telephone networks since Thursday evening has made it difficult to communicate on the real situation.

The population of Kidal, worried by the rising tensions, has largely chosen to flee to the Algerian border to seek refuge.

The current circumstances create a climate of uncertainty and underline the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The presence of foreign forces, in particular the support of Wagner, intensifies the complexity of the situation, raising fears of an escalation of hostilities in the region.

International players are closely monitoring developments, calling for restraint and inclusive dialogue to achieve a lasting solution.
